A Homebuyer’s Guide to Propane Heat

Things you should know when buying a home with propane heat

Are you planning to buy a home in eastern North Carolina? You may already have some idea of what propane could do in your new home: power the grill, clothes dryer, and water heater. But there’s even more that propane can do.

Heating with propane

Propane is a highly efficient and affordable way to heat a home. A propane heating system could lower your energy bills and greenhouse emissions. In fact, versus an all-electric home, a home with a properly functioning propane system produces as much as 68% less greenhouse gas emissions. That’s worth considering as you explore the housing market in eastern North Carolina.

Advantages to propane heating

Propane is gaining popularity as an energy source for a number of reasons:

• It can be used with a variety of standard heating options (e.g., a furnace or boiler).
• It works with both forced air and radiant heating systems—as well as with both central and zone heating.
• When you choose a reputable propane company like Cherry Energy, you have a greater potential for reduced energy costs with propane.
• Propane isn’t toxic.
• Compared to electric heat pumps, propane heaters generate higher temperatures for a noticeably warmer and more comfortable home.

Be prepared

If you purchase a home that uses propane heating, there are a few things you should be prepared to do:

• You’ll need to have your propane delivered. At Cherry Energy we make this economical and hassle-free by offering an auto-fill plan. When you sign up for auto-fill, we’ll track your usage and schedule your deliveries for you. You’ll also receive our best prices.
• Install a programmable thermostat in your new home. If you’re shrewd in choosing your temperature settings to take advantage of the times your home is empty or everyone is asleep, you can save even more.
• Plan on replacing the pilot lights in furnaces and water heaters with an electric lighter. Since propane won’t be needed to keep the pilot light on, you’ll use less of it.
• It’s important to familiarize yourself with the guidelines for safely using propane in your home.
