Posted: August 14, 2023

Frequently Asked Questions

renewable propane Pitt county, nc You already know how much propane can do in and around your eastern North Carolina home. Propane’s versatility and affordability make it a popular fuel choice. But how much do you really know about it? Let’s take a closer look at what propane is and whether it’s a renewable energy source.

What Is Propane?

Propane is a product of natural gas processing and petroleum refining. It’s often compressed and stored as a liquid. You may also hear it referred to as liquefied petroleum gas, LPG or LP. Propane is nontoxic and colorless.

What Is Renewable Propane?

Like conventional propane, renewable propane is reliable, portable, powerful, and versatile. It offers even lower carbon emissions when compared with other energy sources. Renewable propane can be made from a variety of renewable feedstocks. Most commonly, it’s a byproduct of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel made mostly from plant and vegetable oils, animal fats, and used cooking oil.

Is Propane Considered Green?

If you use propane in your eastern North Carolina home, you already know how powerful, safe, and versatile it can be, but did you also know that propane is also considered green?

Here are seven facts you probably didn’t know about propane and its benefits for the environment. According to PERC (The Propane Education & Research Council)…

  1. Propane is the only alternative fuel included in the 1990 Clean Air Act and the 1992 National Energy Policy Act.
  2. Propane is the lightest and simplest hydrocarbon on earth. Because of this fact, propane is one of the cleanest burning fossil fuels—producing almost no greenhouse gas. For example, using a propane instead of a traditional engine in a vehicle can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 90%.
  3. If there is a leak, propane is nontoxic and will not harm the surrounding air, plants, soil, water, or water-based organisms.
  4. Nearly 90% of the U.S. propane supply is produced domestically, so the carbon footprint associated with its transportation is smaller than that of fuels that must be brought to the U.S. from abroad.
  5. Using propane instead of electricity to cook, heat your water, heat your home, and dry your clothes could cut your carbon emissions in half.
  6. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, propane is more efficient to produce than electricity, nearly two-thirds of which is lost between the power plant that produces it and the end consumer.
  7. In comparing the energy required for the extraction, processing, and transportation of propane versus electricity, propane is 87% efficient, but electricity is only 32% efficient. A higher energy efficiency is better for the environment.
